This is a meeting of the Board of Education in public for the purpose of conducting the School District's business and is not to be considered a public community meeting.

Description:
This meeting was noticed by way of publication in the Waterford Post on Thursday, April 20, 2023, and by posting at the District Office (Door #7), at Entrance #19, and on the District's website. The meeting notice was also posted at the municipal halls of the Town of Norway, Town of Raymond, Town of Waterford, Village of Rochester, and the Village of Waterford. Minutes from the February 27, 2023 board meeting were published in the Waterford Post on Thursday, March 23, 2023. The minutes were also published on the District's website.

5. Board Reorganization
Description:
School board members elected at the spring election took office on the fourth Monday in April.

5.A. Election of Board Officers
Description:
Section 120.05(1)(c) of the WI State Statutes notes that in the case of a school board with more than 3 members, the school board shall annually elect a school district president, vice president, treasurer, and clerk from among its members at a school board meeting held on or within 30 days after the 4th Monday in April. The election of board officers can be made by a verbal vote or by paper ballot. Current board officers are: President - Schoenfeld; Vice President - Purtell; Treasurer - Santaga; Clerk - Schwartz; Director - Datka.

5.B. Board Committee Assignments
Description:
Annually, the Board President assigns board members to the various existing committees. Board members may wish to discuss the committee assignments. The District recommends the removal of the Athletic Code of Appeals committee as a board member was not utilized in the past four years, and a replacement would more readily be available at the building level.

5.C. Board Representative - CESA 2 Delegate Convention (June, 2023)
Description:
Annually, the Board is required by statute to appoint a member as its representative at the annual CESA 2 Delegate Convention held in June.

5.D. 2023-2024 Board Meeting Dates
Description:
Board Policy 0164.1 Regular Meetings states that the Board shall hold a meeting at least once each month on a date and at a time and place determined annually by a resolution of the Board. Attached is a list of proposed board meeting dates for the upcoming school year, which follows the established schedule of the fourth Monday each month with a few exceptions to avoid conflicts with holidays and spring break.

7.A. State Bowling Qualifiers
Description:
Members of the bowling team qualified for the state tournament, which was held March 3-5 in Weston, WI. Team members include Allison Bolda, Kylie Ciaglo, Maggie Frost, Mylie Fujinaka, Laurel Glatch, Addison Kinsey, Chloe Longo, Madison Michalski, Alyssa Ortiz, Christopher Bird, Stephen Duell, Colin Fredrick, Jackson Heath, Seth Hernandez, Brennan Kortendick, Lucas Talavera, and Cole Wendling. The team is coached by Denise Knueppel, Ryan Kiedrowski, Dale Kiedrowski, and Zach Torosian.

7.B. WSMA High School State honors Project
Description:
Megan Frohne (Orchestra), Lily Balge (Mixed Choir), Josiah Bonack (Mixed Choir), and Everix Machan (Mixed Choir) have been selected from 1,100 student auditions for 429 positions in the five ensembles for the WSMA High School State Honors Project. These students will participate in an intensive four-day summer camp in June and perform in October as part of the Wisconsin State Music Conference. These Waterford Union High School students are set to perform on Thursday, October 27, at 4:30 pm with the Band & Orchestra concert and at 8:00 pm with the Mixed & Treble Choir, both at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, Wisconsin. Congratulations to these students and also to Mr. Machan & Mr. Luttio for guiding them through the audition process! |
7.C. Sophia Martin - SC Johnson National Happy Hands Award Recipient
Description:
Each year SC Johnson hosts its Happy Hands contest to promote the importance of hand washing at school by encouraging K-12 students to use their creative skills and imagination to design a custom soap/sanitizer dispenser. Submissions were evaluated for visual appeal, overall hand hygiene design, creativity and unique design elements. This year's winner is WUHS sophomore Sophia Martin.

Description:
At this time the board would like to invite any member of the audience to stand with comments about items of interest or concern that do or do not appear on the agenda this evening. Please begin by stating your name and address. It would be appreciated if you would limit your comments to three minutes so that we can keep the meeting moving in a timely fashion and allow others an opportunity to speak. We ask that you remember that Wisconsin law prohibits us from discussing specific employees or their job performance. Thank you for your support of our school district.

Description:
Katie Graf, Director of High School Partnerships, will speak to the Board about recent student successes and future opportunities.

9.D. Course Enrollment Numbers 2023-24
Description:
Small class sizes are highly desirable for students to receive a more personalized learning experience. However, given the current fiscal constraints, it may not be feasible to offer certain classes with low enrollment. The decision not to offer is made after carefully considering various factors such as enrollment numbers, available resources, and staffing.
Principal Foster will provide an overview of course enrollments, decisions to delay the offering of low-enrollment courses, and alternative options available for courses with low enrollment.

9.E. Next Steps Following a Failed Referendum Question
Description:
This agenda item aims to discuss the next steps that should be taken following a failed school referendum question. The school board recognizes the importance of receiving community support for funding initiatives and acknowledges the disappointment and frustration that may come with a failed referendum question. In light of this, the following topics will be discussed:
The District recognizes that the failure of a referendum question can be discouraging, but also sees it as an opportunity to learn and improve. By engaging with the community, analyzing the reasons for the failed referendum, and exploring alternative solutions, the school board is committed to finding ways to best serve the students and families in our district. |
