Board Self-Assessment review - Marcia Herring lead

Committee Structure - presenting to board after committee meetings; voting without knowing all/more information; chair/supt provide agenda - simple, bulleted items listed below agenda items; attachment agenda/minutes to board meeting agenda so remainder can review; trust committee members to make decisions but provide items for other members to review prior to vote; 

Budget - no budget work session - special board meeting at end of August considered "budget workshop" and updates from supt can be considered "budget update" - budget evolves throughout the year and supt will update in regards to elements that will affect budget and keep board engaged; budget for public review and allow feedback - budget hearing before regular board meeting; receive monthly budget reports - trending reports (ex current, last, and 5-yrs) possiblility - income and expenses compared - half page report, not lengthy report - more point of reference report - verbal report of percentage spent for year;

Policy - j-m: how to answer - policies aimed toward effective community engagement - policy review; kudos to curriculum mapping; curriculum review - how it affects budget and how our scores are affected - alignment to standards and testing; curriculum policy CAN be more specific but does not have to - just need to ensure curriculum review cycle; community engagement - two pieces: 1.  are you reviewing/updating/adopting policy?, 2. community access to policies via website; communicate via social media and website and engage through board meetings; 

Government Relations - board interacts with local city government on intermittent basis; once (or twice) a year work session with village board and school board to open up communications between boards; community businesses a part of RCA/Houses - invited in to participate;

Student Learning & Achievement - board ensures data results are shared with community - share via newsletters and district report is on website; social media is used well but website still lacking; recognizing academic achievement via website - not a good balance on front page; emeetings agenda on school website; summary of meeting due by law, the community does have to take some responsibility and take some initiative to come to meetings; 

Anything that warrants a goal by the board or revisit? Priority?
-Review/update policy at every board meeting (could pull out four or five for every meeting): get a better sense of policies and more familiar with policies as a board member; handbooks align/mirror

Goals - relating to policies and moving those that don't align with policies to committees (ex - move extra custodial questions to personnel committee)

Long-Term (3-5 years) versus Short-Term (1-2 years)
Prioritize - When to move from long-term to short-term

All Day Preschool: space? need? value? attraction?

After School Programs: daycare vs academic enrichment vs ??? - leave to committee or to administration? - research and assess value - what do we want it to look like? - admin researching and presenting data

FrameWorks use, not AdvancEd - FW fits better, more flexibility

Discussion:  NASB President's Board Award - encourage more board participation; what does it say to your staff and your community?; take your responsibility seriously - grow in your role and learn - model that by participation; all have ownership as a board member;
