Discussion:
Communications Coordinator Katy Urban presented the Douglas School Board with the Associated School Boards of South Dakota's Silver Level ALL Award. The ALL award, which stands for Act, Learn, Lead, recognizes school boards for participating in outside activities and board development training during the 2021-22 school year.

9.A. District Demographics Update by RSP & Associates.
Discussion:
Rob Schwarz from RSP & Associates explained the results of the demographic study and projections made. They gathered data from Pennington and Meade Counties, City of Box Elder, Ellsworth AFB and the school district. The increase in student enrollment is tied to the availability of housing in the Box Elder community. With increased enrollment, the school buildings exceed capacity and the district will need more facilities.

9.B. Strategic Direction Update.
Discussion:
Superintendent Kevin Case introduced Brian Riggs from Riggs Enterprises who conducted the first day of the strategic direction process with a cross-section of staff and community members participating. The team identified four focus areas: 1) Growth & Identity; 2) Community & Well-Being; 3) Adaptability; and 4) Ownership & Accountability. At the next meeting in October, the Strategy Team will discuss strategies and tactics to make the plan operational.

12.A.1. NAFIS Report.
Discussion:
Superintendent Kevin Case reported on his recent trip to the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools (NAFIS) conference in Washington DC with Business Manager Trista Olney. He continues to make connections with people, processes, and resources available to school, as well as, meet with the legislators.

12.A.2. OLDCC Grant Update.
Discussion:
Superintendent Kevin Case announced they have been awarded the $2.6 million grant from the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC). The money will be used to help pay for the elementary building design cost, demographic study, engineering studies and other planning costs associated with the new elementary building project.

12.A.3. WDTC Joint Meeting.
Discussion:
Superintendent Kevin Case shared that the Board of Directors at Western Dakota Technical College would like to have a joint meeting with the Douglas School Board and administrators. Strengthening a community partnership in technical education for Douglas students.

Tonya Amaral commented on last week's homecoming activities. The next Booster Club meeting is scheduled for October 17 at 6:30 p.m. Cathy Melendez attended the Box Elder Area Chamber of Commerce meeting last week. The Chamber does have funding available to help with student activities. Fran Apland recently attended the School Liaison Officer Summit in Texas. She feels that it will positively affect her work with the district. Amy McGovern appreciated being part of the District Strategic Direction Planning today. Tanya Gray reminded everyone of the ASBSD Region Meeting being hosted at Vandenberg on Wednesday. It is a great time to learn more about issues in the legislative process. Our District Food Service is providing the meal for the event. |
