On behalf of ACS schools, Principals Anna Jones and Cherry Davidson presented a certificate of donation to Arlington Education Foundation in honor of Board Appreciation Week.

Superintendent Mason also presented the Board with a token of appreciation.

Jill Yelland, 5972 Windsor Oak Circle, Arlington, TN 38002:

• Rezoning
• School Start Times
• School Start Times Conference in Washington, DC (end of April)

• Board embraces legislative action to protect our students in public education
• Legislative Breakfast: Legislators and ACS board members, Kay Williams and Barbara Fletcher, attended as well as board members from other municipalities.  ACS Legislative Agenda was given to the Legislators.  Mr. Mayo and Ms. Speakman attended as well.
• Weekly legislative conference call (beginning 1/27/17) with municipalities working together on legislative agenda items.
• TSBA reminders:  Day on the Hill and annual education requirement
• Special Called Board Meeting: February 21, 2017 at Arlington High School Library at 7:00 p.m.

Lakeland Students (based on letters of intent received):

• AMS - Current 5th-7th graders: 23% will remain at ACS and provide their own transportation
• DES - K-4: 40% will remain at DES and provide their own transportation
• TOTAL K-7 RISING: 25% will remain at ACS and provide their own transportation

Rezoning:

• AES: 249 K-4 students affected
• Student Services looking into in-district transfers (now open to rising 5th graders and siblings and military families) and will provide their own transportation
• Results by end of January
• Overall projections (with transition of Lakeland students):  2017-18 projection number of students 4,599 students.  Current number of students - 5,086.  Loss of 487 students.
• Staffing will be based on the loss of 487 students
• One step closer to timeline for making notification to Lakeland
• Teachers affected by the reduction in force will have interviews with Lakeland School System

Shared Services:

• Vote on February 21st:  agree to terminate existing 3-year Interlocal Agreement for Shared Services.  Termination date - June 30, 2017.
• New agreement discussion: space and funding for employees
• Finalizing agreement with which municipalities will enter into the new agreement and what services will be offered
• New agreement would be brought to the board for approval at February 28th meeting
• New agreement would only extend 1 year instead of 3

Expansion to Academic Program (Specifically to AHS)

• Preview at February or March meeting
• Align academic courses to community partner needs
• CTE
• Technology 1:1
• Outreach with Community Partners

Apple (visit to Apple Headquarters in California)

• ACS invited to attend Apple Executive Briefing
• Met with Educational Staff
• Apple impressed with how ACS handled the roll out of the 1:1 technology at AMS
• Connect technology with instruction and everyday life as a technology district
• Don't leave teachers behind: provide professional development for teachers
• Good mid-year report from SES on 1:1 roll out at AMS.  Final report in April.
• Succinct plan in place.
• Pieces of the plan will be in the upcoming proposed budget.
• Technology and Critical Thinking will tie into the new testing standards
• Technology committee formed (collaboration of many stakeholders)

Health Insurance

• Ending 3-year contract with current health insurance (Meritain)
• RFP issued
• Sherrill-Morgan still consultant through health trust
• 5 of 6 municipalities are currently part of the trust (all except Germantown), and 3 cities (Lakeland, Collierville, Bartlett)
• Financials good for health trust
• Health Trust will make recommendations for ones to interview and possible negotiations
• Recommendation will come before the board for approval before end of school year
• Cost savings to the Trust but still provide good service to employees

Kudos:

• Memphis in May Student Exchange Program
• Educational Journey to Columbia for 1 week
• 40 students applied for 10 positions:  2 selected from AHS, Gillian Stuart & Nicholas Beheimer

STEM 4th & 5th

• AES and DES Science and Engineering Design Fair
• Individual and Group winners received recognition

LEAD Arlington

• Final meeting on March 6, 2017, 9:00 - 11:00, hosted by Arlington Chamber of Commerce and local businesses
• LEAD has encouraged the collaboration of Government, Business and Schools to work together

Transportation

• Transportation is being reviewed as numbers come in for rezoning
• Cost and route options being reviewed
• Options will come to the board as a budget item for approval in February or March

• Governor State Address - January 30th: will give clear picture of budget for education
• Vouchers - both sides fighting for vouchers
• Extra PE time - filed but not voted on yet:  e-mail legislators and encourage them to vote to not have extra PE time added to the school day.
