D. Superintendent's Report: Dr. Piraino
Discussion:
Dr. Piraino reintroduced the Beyond the Classroom series, a concept the board requested. This series will review underfunded and unfunded mandates that the district must follow.
Dr. Piraino introduced Officer Tim Skoog, the Chief and Director of Safety and Security, for the first session of the Beyond the Classroom presentations. Officer Skoog introduced himself and reviewed the attached points related to Safety and Security within the district. Officer Skoog emphasized that the district's officers cover all school sessions and all after-school events. He explained that the district decided to invest in a school police department back in 2017, prior to this becoming a state requirement in 2018. The intent was to keep the school safer and build relationships with the students. Dr. Piraino thanked Officer Skoog for ensuring the intent and vision from 2017 became a successful reality. Mr. Johnson spoke about 2026 renovations and replacements and shared the attached presentation. He shared positive reports received from coaches and athletes related to the recent updates, as well as the current status of projects that are wrapping up. Dr. Piraino introduced Ms. Fako. Ms. Fako explained that she entered into a drawing through the University of Pittsburgh to raise funds for education. She won and brought some of her colleagues up to receive the award with her at a recent University of Pittsburgh football game. She explained that she plans to use the funds to benefit multiple classrooms with a virtual field trip that ties into the curriculum the high school is already using. Dr. Piraino recognized the Board for the work that goes into their roles. He recognized Mr. Kurimsky and Mr. Azzolina for their respective 5 years of service to the School Board. F. Public Comment
Discussion:
Leslie Hoffman, Murrsyville, PA
Ms. Hoffman stated that the district's rankings in the Pittsburgh Public Times dropped, expressed concern, and asked what concrete steps the Board and administration will be taking. She shared recommendations from two articles she found. Dr. Piraino responded that the rank is focused solely on standardized tests, and that the Board has considered some of the suggestions she shared. Dr. Piraino shared that the district had been charged with focusing more on preparing students for a successful future, rather than placing a weekly focus on standardized test preparation. Dr. Piraino reviewed statistics related to students in the district taking College in High School courses, how our AP course enrollment and pass rate is higher than neighboring districts in the county, our SAT score averages, post-secondary matriculation, as well as our Career and Technical center opportunities. Mr. Kurimsky shared that the article Ms. Hoffman is referencing focuses on just one measure, but that the district focuses on many more. Mr. Zebrak said that it is our responsibility to ensure we communicate all that the district does that sets us apart. |
