Dr. Judith Houle, Director of Curriculum has submitted her resignation effective June 30, 2009.  Dr. Houle has accepted the position of Superintendent of the Belchertown Public Schools in Massachusetts.

In my capacity as Superintendent of Schools, I recommend that the Board of Education nonrenew the teaching contracts of the following persons at the end of the 2008-2009 school year in accordance with the provisions of Connecticut General Statutes Section 10-151, and that the board authorize me to furnish written notice of the action.

I am making this recommendation for the following reasons, any one or all of which I view to be a sufficient basis for the recommended action:

-  the elimination of the position or loss of position to another teacher;
- the failure to meet our minimum standards for continued employment.

 
You should know that:

have been advised that I intended to make this recommendation.  If the board takes action, the teacher has the right under Connecticut General Statutes Section 10-151 to request the reasons for the board's action to nonrenew his/her contract of employment.  Further, depending upon those reasons, the teacher may be entitled to a due-process hearing to seek reconsideration of the board's decision to nonrenew the contract of employment.

I also recommend that I be authorized and instructed to communicate notice of this action in writing to the affected teacher and to respond for the board to any appropriate requests that may be forthcoming from the teacher or his/her representatives as provided in the Teacher Tenure Law.

As a result of the elimination of the second co-principal at the Somers Elementary School the administrative structure effective July 1, 2009 will be one full time principal and one full-time assistant principal.  This reorganization will create a new position for a full-time assistant principal at the Somers Elementary School. 

As a result of reductions to the 2009-2010 budget the ten-month office secretary position at Somers High School created in August, 2007 has been eliminated.

The Policy Committee is first warning these new policies recommended by CABE which have been reviewed by administration and the subcommittee as well.  Second warning/adoption is anticipated on the 3/23/09 agenda.

A breakdown of course selections for Somers High School for the 2009-2010 school year is provided at this time.  These numbers are based upon actual selections by students grades 9-12.  Mr. Cotzin will be available to respond to any questions regarding this data.

As of March 1, 2009 there has been a net increase of one student in the district raising the total student population to 1,728 students.

At the elementary level there has been an increase of one student in grade 1 and a reduction of one student in grade 3 as a result of families moving in and out of town.

At the middle school level there has been a net increase of one student in grade 8 as a result of a family moving into town.

At the high school level one student in grade 9 has left the district and three students have moved from grade 9 into grade 10 as a result of acquiring academic credits enabling them to become sophomore students.  In grade 10 an additional student has been registered as a result of returning from the state of Florida and one student has moved into grade 11 as a result of achieving academic credits enabling that student to become a junior.  In grade 12 one student who has been an exchange student has returned to her country of origin and an additional student has moved into grade 12 from an outside private school placement.
