VIII.A. Information and Discussion on Social Media Lawsuit
Presenter:
William Shinoff, Esq. of Frantz Law Group & Joseph Tann Esq. of J. Tann & Co.
Discussion:
There were two presenters via Google Meet for this agenda item. Attorney Joseph Tann had a family emergency and was not able to attend. In attendance on his behalf were Attorneys Dean Kawamoto and Felicia Craick from Keller Rohrback, LLP. The second presenter was Attorney William Shinoff from Frantz Law Group. Both presenters provided information on the social media lawsuit that the District could join. School districts across the country are suing social media companies over claims that their applications are addicting and harmful to student's mental health and well-being. The claim is that these platforms use algorithms to keep students scrolling. The use of these platforms is believed to cause increased anxiety, depression, eating disorders and self harm in teens. Some districts have also seen an increase in vandalism and school threats. These suits allege that the companies knew that their practices were harmful to teens, and hopes to force changes in practices to protect them. There is no cost to the District if they join the litigation since law firms are working on a contingency basis.
