2. Cost of Storage Mezzanine vs Outdoor Sheds
Description:
I received a question about the sheds in our building plans. At one time we were planning to construct a 2nd story mezzanine above the cafetorium kitchen. This would have provided us the much needed space for PE, athletics and community education equipment. The cost was a little more than $300,000 for 1,500 SF. We decided much wiser to go with outdoor storage for a fraction of the cost and much more square feet. It is outdoor cold storage in the sheds, but that's okay for what we're storing. Also, avoiding steps to 2nd story storage is a huge plus with archery targets, cross country skis, etc. The smaller storage shed is 3,300 SF and will cost approximately $60,000. In here will be stored equipment for PE, athletics, and community education. Also in here is custodial storage for the pickup truck, toolcat w/ attachments, lawnmowers, etc. The larger storage shed is 5,850 SF and will cost approximately $70,000. In here is room for all of the school vans, short buses, custodial trailer, band trailer, PLTW trailer, etc. The smaller shed has a concrete floor to keep the PE, athletics and community education equipment cleaner. This is why it's only $10,000 less than the larger shed. So, in total the two sheds will cost us approximately $130,000. This is much better than the $300,000. And we're getting 9,150 SF of storage instead of 1,500. Also, the transportation needs are fully met with some room for small growth (e.g, two additional buses). |
