3.A. Delta Dental Mobile Program Truck Visit & DSD Nursing Staff
Rationale:
For a small fee, which came out of the District's Wellness Fund, Douglas School District was able to bring the Delta Dental trucks to our schools last month. Due to time constraints, Delta was not able to see every student who signed up. In total, Delta did preventive and restorative work on 55 students, which translates to more than $48,000 in dental services! We are grateful to our nursing staff who worked tirelessly to coordinate Delta’s visit. Clearly, there was an incredible need and the value of this service cannot be understated. Thank you again to all who made this possible for our students.

Recommended Motion(s):
Approve an additional DHS Assistant Track & Field Coach for throwing events-filled annually as needed. This motion, made by {Insert Board Member} and seconded by {Insert Board Member}, {Insert Action Result}.
Rationale:
The number of throwers in the high school track program has grown significantly from 25 beginning the season in 2021 to 31 throwers finishing the season in 2022. The SDHSAA has also sanctioned javelin as a high school throwing event. The practice and competition areas for the three throwing events are far apart and cannot be supervised adequately by fewer than two coaches.
Staff ratio for track team 2022 was 21 : 1. Because track students are usually involved in more than one event, the ratio per event was the following: Horizontal / vertical jumps: 28 : 1 Pole Vault: 10 : 1 Throwing events: 33 : 1 Middle & Distance events: 18 : 1 Hurdles, Sprints, Relays: 45 : 1 Anticipated staff ratio for track team 2023 25 : 1 Javelin, discus and pole vault are all high risk areas that require constant, knowledgeable supervision. It is critical to have close supervision and effective instruction to ensure student safety and success.

Rationale:
The ASBSD Legislative Action Network is designed to activate designated members of local school boards to represent the legislative positions of the Association and their local board. 10. Fiscal Resources Items:
|
10.A. South Dakota Teacher Compensation Accountability Data
In 2016, the SD Legislature passed a half-cent sales tax increase with the purpose of increasing teacher compensation in SD. Since that date, schools have been required to report compensation data (SDCL 13-13-73.6) in an effort to show that the additional dollars are being used for teacher compensation. Each year is compared to FY2017 for comparison purposes. Douglas has always made it a priority to compensate our staff with the most competitive salary & benefits package as possible while still being fiscally responsible. The attached report came from the State of South Dakota - we sorted it to show the District with the highest average teacher compensation (includes benefits) and the District with the highest average teacher salary (does not include benefits). |
