11. CURRICULUM MATERIALS ADOPTION HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS
Walled Lake High Schools offer five choices for Physics courses in which the current Advanced Placement (AP) textbook and Physics courses support materials, lab manuals, and lab equipment have not been updated in over 20 years. The current lab manuals do not meet the Physics Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or the Advanced Placement (AP) Physics College Board standards, and the current lab equipment is either broken or too old for the required standards. A committee of high school science teachers and curriculum coordinators met and examined the Physics lab manuals, lab equipment, and AP Physics textbooks. Based on the results of the detailed examination of curriculums and vendor presentations of supported lab materials, the committee recommends the purchase of lab manuals and equipment from Vernier and lab equipment not supported by Vernier from Pasco. The committee also recommends the continued use of The Physics Classroom, © 1996-2021, online platform that is NGSS aligned for the General and Honors Physics curriculum, and adoption of the free online Advanced Placement Physics textbooks, William Moebs, Samuel L. Ling, and Jeff Sanny. University Physics (Web Version). Rice University; OpenSTAX. (2021) and Gregg Wolfe and Erika Gasper. College Physics for the AP Courses (Web Version). Rice University; OpenSTAX (2021). This process has been endorsed by Administration, and a motion for approval of the purchase of lab manuals and equipment that support the Physics curriculum will be presented to the Board at April 7, 2022, meeting. |
12. TEXTBOOK ADOPTION HIGH SCHOOL WORLD HISTORY
Walled Lake High School’s World History is both a graduation requirement under the Michigan Merit Curriculum and a Walled Lake graduation requirement. Our current course resource, World History Connection to Today, Prentice Hall © 1999 is not aligned to the 2019 adopted Michigan K-12 Social Studies standards, nor does it align with the embedded elements of the C3 Framework. A committee of current high school World History teachers and the curriculum coordinator met and evaluated three resources for a comprehensive print and digital resource that would address the newly adopted Michigan World history Standards for high school, as well as; hold a recent copyright, promote a variety of instructional strategies, provide appropriate readability levels, contain accurate, relevant, and engaging content, and be absent of cultural or gender bias. Based on the results of the detailed examination of the textbooks as well as presentations by the publishers, it is the committee's recommendation that World History Modern Times, McGraw-Hill ©2023 be adopted for use in High School World History: This process has been endorsed by Administration, and a motion for approval of the textbook purchase will be presented to the Board at April 7, 2022, meeting. |
