E.2. *Journalism Education Association National High School Journalism Contest
Agenda Item Type:
Consent Item
Rationale:
Congratulations to Bellevue East on their success at the Journalism Education Association National High School Journalism Contest in Seattle, Washington.
The national contest is extremely competitive. Students sit in a room, listen to a presenter, are given a prompt, and then hand write their articles, without opportunity for revision. The articles are then given to judges (with about 10 judges in each category of writing). Out of thousands of competitors, with upwards of 40 to 100 students in each category, awards are only given for superior, excellent, and honorable mention. A vast majority of entries do not win any award at all. As a national contest judge (I did not judge their writing), I know the judging is brutal. We are beyond elated to see that all five of our student writers who competed (at the national level for the first time) have come home with an award! Results for these student members of the Tom Tom staff: Maya Valenti, Excellent - Review Writing Victoria Bogatz, Honorable Mention - Feature Writing Savannah Stultz, Honorable Mention - Commentary Writing Lillian Herrick, Honorable Mention - Sports Writing Charlotte Palm, Honorable Mention - Newswriting |

Each spring, the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor a nation-wide art competition. The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent in our nation's youth, as well as in our congressional district.
