The District is amending the budget that was originally adopted on August 3, 2021. The District has been awarded an additional $4,880,000 in Federal Emergency Connectivity funds which needs to be expended as soon as they are received to avoid a negative impact on future State Aid funding. The additional amount is so large that the originally adopted budget of expenditures cannot be reduced during the remainder of the current year without significant operational changes that would not allow the district to meet instructional goals for 2021-22.
Administrative Recommendation: The administration recommends that the Board approve the amended 2021-22 budget as presented. |

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program was established in 1923 and has fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students, including distinguished alumni, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, Kent Bellows and Andy Warhol, all of whom received recognition in the Awards when they were teens.
The Scholastic Art Awards of Nebraska is a statewide visual Art competition hosted by the Omaha Public Schools. Student work was evaluated by a panel of judges compiling evidence from three areas: Originality, Technical Skill, & Emergence of a Personal Voice or Vision. Students were awarded three levels of awards; Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention. Gold Key works have been automatically advanced to the national level of adjudication in New York City. National Medalists will be announced on Wednesday, March 23, 2022. The winning work from all across Nebraska is now on display at the OPS TAC building through March 31, 2022. Bellevue East Artists earned 16 awards this year at the Scholastic Art Competition. Congratulations to Bellevue West forensics students as they competed at the State Speech Championships in Kearney March 16, 2022. The team placed 5th overall. Individual finalists were: Tamyia Bender, Persuasive Champion and Program Oral Interpretation Champion; and Robyn Boyland, 3rd in Persuasive and 4th in Program Oral Interpretation.
This is the second year the team has been top 5 at state. Tamyia is the first Bellevue West student to win Persuasive Speaking and also the first to win Program Oral Interpretation. Bellevue West has not had a double state champion since Kelly West in 2002. Tamyia Bender was also selected by the NSAA to be part of the Nebraska Public Media's production "NSAA Speech - 'Best of the Best'. Tamyia will perform her Program Oral Interpretation for a televised broadcast. |

Congratulations to Bellevue West students Nathan Walther, Logan Jenison and McKenna Decker, who qualified for the Nebraska Seal of Biliteracy in Latin. Nathan and Logan earned Silver and McKenna earned Gold. They are the first World Languages students at Bellevue West to be recognized for their proficiency in a world language.
There are two levels of the Nebraska Seal of Biliteracy: Gold and Silver. A Gold-level recipient has demonstrated a performance equivalent to an Intermediate High or Advanced Low, as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The student can communicate with ease and confidence when dealing with routine tasks and social situations in a variety of contexts. A Silver-level recipient has demonstrated a performance equivalent to an Intermediate Mid, as defined by ACTFL. The student can communicate with some comfort when dealing with uncomplicated situations in predictable contexts. |

Congratulations to Bellevue West student Nathan Walther and Bellevue East student Ryan Wagner for being selected as World Language Distinguished Scholars. Nathan received High Honors for Latin Language Learning, Latin Intermediate Low (Levels 3&4). Nathan's teacher is Leslie Hooper. Ryan received High Honors for German Language Learning, German Intermediate Low (Levels 3&4). Ryan's teacher is Rae Fahrlander. Nathan was quoted in NDE's press release as well. "Learning a world language means strengthening one's understanding of humans across all backgrounds, ethnicities, and time periods.," said Bellevue West High senior and World Language Distinguished Scholar Nathan Walther. "Learning a world language is an essential skill that is necessary in the diverse world we live in today, because it builds much needed connections between people amidst much divisiveness." The World Language Distinguished Scholar Award recognizes Nebraska students for their leadership in language learning, commitment to language study, appreciation for cultural diversity, and communicative competence. Students were nominated by their teachers and submitted a portfolio. |

This was an opportunity for parents/guardians to complete the registration process for their child to enroll in BPS. Kindergarten Orientation/Roundup events will take place in April at each elementary school. To date, 350 students have registered for kindergarten. By state law, a child must be five years of age on or before July 31 in order to enter kindergarten. The law also includes a provision for early entrance assessment. Five children are scheduled for early entrance assessment.
