7.a. Textbook Adoption
Rationale:
Each year our system reviews new textbooks in a particular curriculum area for adoption. This year we had fourteen (14) committees consisting of classroom teachers, parents, and the Secondary Curriculum Director reviewing textbooks. The curriculum and instructional areas reviewed this year were Accounting, Marketing, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Personal Finance, Foreign Language, US History, World History, European History, Econ/Gov, US Gov/Civics. Mrs. Rafalowski recommends that Sullivan County do a Blanket Adoption. Districts are required to adopt textbook materials from the approved list or submit a waiver to purchase textbook materials not on the approved list. This year several of the curriculum areas did not have any companies that submitted a textbook for review. This process allows our district to adopt textbooks and materials that better fit the needs of our students. She also recommends that textbooks that are not being used in this adoption cycle be declared surplus.

7.b. Policy 5.106 Application and Employment
Rationale:
Policies 5.106 (Application and Employment) and 5.118 (Background Investigations)
Public Chapter 1006 requires district employees to undergo background checks at least once every five years after the date of hire. We added this information to 5.118.
Public Chapter 1006 also requires districts to perform background checks on contract workers and volunteers. We updated 5.118 to include this information. These new requirements are in addition to the background checks that are already mandated for applicants for teaching positions and any other positions that require proximity to children. Additionally, we added information regarding checking with the Department of Children's Services and the state's vulnerable person's registry to these policies, to highlight the district's responsibility in this area.
