6.A. Board Candidate Interviews and Selection

Description:

Two candidates are scheduled to interview:

Michael Douglas
Chris Hodgman

Letters of interest from both candidates are included in the packet for board review.
Interview Process

Interview questions are attached.
Both candidates will be interviewed together. Because this is a public meeting, candidates cannot be required to leave the room while the other is interviewed.
The Board President will ask Question #1.
Remaining board members will each ask one question from Questions #2-7.
The Board President will conclude with Question #8.
Candidates will alternate who answers first for each question (e.g., Michael answers first for Question 1, Chris for Question 2, etc.) to ensure fairness.

Board Member Ratings

Board members should rate each candidate’s responses using the scale provided on the interview question sheet.
These ratings will be used only if needed to break a tie (e.g., a 3-3 split).

Post-Interview Discussion and Selection

After interviews conclude, the board will go around the table to allow each member to share strengths and positives observed for each candidate.
Additional discussion may occur at the board’s discretion.
Each board member will then complete the attached selection form indicating their preferred candidate.
Forms will be turned in to the Board President, who will read each member’s selection into the record.
If a candidate receives a majority of support, the Board President will entertain a motion to appoint that candidate. A second and discussion will follow prior to the vote.
If no candidate receives a majority, the superintendent will tally and announce the interview question rating totals for each candidate. The board will then engage in further discussion and proceed to another motion.

6.D. Advisory Committee

Description: The administration is requesting Board approval of a district-wide Professional Development Advisory Committee, as required by the Michigan Department of Education, to allow certain professional development hours to be counted as instructional time.

The committee must be composed of a majority of teaching staff and include representation from multiple grade levels and subject areas, as well as special education, non-teaching staff, parents, and administrators. The committee’s role is to review and recommend at least eight hours of qualifying professional development to be counted as pupil instructional time for the current school year.

Board approval of committee membership is required for compliance with state requirements and pupil accounting audit expectations. By meeting this requirement, the district is able to count up to 35 hours of professional development time as instructional time for the school year.
