5.B. Network Update
Speaker(s):
James Weiss
Description:
The network firewall and core switch for SCS is at end-of-life. Both of these items are Erate eligible which means the school receives a percentage off the purchase and installation costs. SCS typically qualifies for a 40% discount. This fall the technology department worked with a company called Elite Fund (who SCS has partnered with for several projects including the recent fiber project as well as the networking equipment for the new EL) to submit an RFP for these two items and included an option to upgrade the remaining network switches in the Jr/Sr High. SCS received 7 responses to this request and rated the responses on 12 criteria (documentation available upon request). Sentinel technologies, who does much of our regular work, submitted the highest rated proposal. Below is a summary:
Firewall: $13,972 Core Switch: $16,374 Network Switching: $37,112 Professional Installation and Programing: $33,772 Schoolcraft's cost would be 60% of the total of $101,230 which is $60,738. In addition, SCS requested a secondary firewall which would provide a backup solution if the primary firewall failed. This would add $5,128 to the cost and is not eligible for discounts. SCS can choose to complete some or all of this project. The firewall and core switch are the most pressing portion of the project. The benefit to completing the full project would be consolidated professional services as the technicians could complete all the installation and programming in one trip. If network switching is done at a later date, the cost for total professional installation and programming would likely increase. If this purchase is approved, SCS, with the help of Elite Fund, will need to submit additional forms and wait for a funding commitment from Erate which usually takes about three months. After that, installation and programming can be scheduled at a time convenient to the district, likely after school is out in June. In summary, the technology department is requesting approval to purchase a new firewall, backup firewall, and core switch. In addition, it would be advantageous, both financially and in terms of service interruptions, to include the network-switching portion. However, the network switches currently in the Jr/Sr High will run reliably for the 2026-2027 school year if necessary. |
