6.2.c. Play & Learn Group for Kindergartners at West Bristol
Rationale:
Kids be Kids Play & Learn Group was designed by our FRC Child & Family Advocate to ensure that kindergarten students, enrolled in the after school program, have an opportunity to relax, play and de-stress. It is a long day for these Kindergartners who are at school from 6:30 in the morning to 6 at night. Our West Bristol FRC has a large kid friendly room filled with age appropriate toys, props, dress up, manipulatives, play dough, a couch, bean bag chairs, and stuffed animals galore. This grant will serve approximately 20 kindergarten students giving them an opportunity to come and play in the FRC room twice a week. Researchers and educators know that these playful activities benefit the development of the whole child across social, cognitive, physical, and emotional domains….Yet, while experts continue to expound a powerful argument for the importance of play in children’s lives, the actual time children spend playing continues to decrease. The FRC has found that kindergarteners currently participating in this program have less challenging behaviors during the school day and are better behaved at the b/a school program. It is also more appropriately addressing the social-emotional needs of these students by providing an opportunity for free play, and offering a less structure/demanding environment of the regular school day & b/a school educational program. |

6.2.d. People Empowering People Grant (PEP)

People Empowering People Program is a twelve week curriculum designed to train parents in advocacy skills including setting goals along with devising and implementing an action plan that increases parent involvement in the schools and the community. PEP is designed to build on parent strengths and recognizes the unique life experiences and capacities of each person. The ultimate purpose of this training is to encourage parent involvement in the school and work towards the elimination of the achievement gap. This is a one year grant (September 2018 - May 2019). |

6.2.e. Quality Enhancement Grant for Bristol FRC's for FY 2018-2019
Rationale:
The Quality Enhancement Grant is being submitted to the Bristol School Readiness Council (BSRC) for the purpose of enhancing the services provided by the Family Resource Centers (FRC) at Greene-Hills, South Side and West Bristol Schools. The FRCs are charged with the responsibility of providing comprehensive family support services and building a strong school-family-community partnership that strengthens healthy family living. This grant request supports the Kith and Kin Services program. Kith & Kin refers to families using informal childcare arrangements between or among relatives, friends and neighbors. The Comprehensive Family Services program supports parent leadership workshops, health fair activities and the Road to Reading program which distributes free books to preschoolers enrolled in BSRC programs. The grant funds assist in the continuation of these programs that are consistent with the basic goals of the FRCs. The FRC has been fortunate to receive these funds, yearly for the past eleven years.
