17.A. Discussion on Public Use of District Facilities
Description:
We continue to have people upset about not opening up our facilities (i.e. baseball/softball indoor hitting facility) for public use. One person called me last week upset claiming that he was told he couldn't use the indoor facility yet other "teams" have been using it. After looking into it, no one has authorized nor opened it up for other teams. Our high school softball coaches have opened it up for high school girls either in the morning or evenings this summer, but to my knowledge no travel teams have been in there. I have recently let a group of kids use the high school baseball field for practices, but this is only because there is no other public baseball field in the community for older kids to use. The baseball field is still city-owned and it used to be made available for public use before we renovated it.
I'd like for us to discuss this and for you to give me your opinions. The person who called me last week made the remark that he didn't see how we allow kids to use our gyms during youth basketball season but we don't allow use of our hitting facilities because of the wear and tear on the pitching machines and balls. He thinks that there is wear and tear on gym floors too. I told him that the gyms are larger spaces and multiple gyms are used for little dribblers basketball practices. Also, there are no other gyms in the city for public use so we have an agreement with the little dribblers board to use our gyms. Bottom line is we won't ever make everyone happy no matter what we do. It's a case of "darned if you do and darned if you don't!" There are some people who have an entitled outlook on this. They expect us to let them use whatever they want. |
