11.3. Approve selling the Welding Class, student-built trailer
Description:
The welding class built the trailer last school year. There was an assortment of students who worked on it at various points in the process. One of my favorite parts was seeing how attention to detail early on in the process led to parts fitting together better later on. There were some moments where the kids wanted to say "it's close enough", but I made them do it better. They ended up thanking me later. It was also fun to see the kids put their welding skills on display for something "real". It wasn't good enough anymore to mess something up and just try again on a different piece; mistakes now had consequences. And they sure let each other hear about it when they happened! It was a tremendous project that allowed students to not just weld, but build and assemble. That part of the process comes with its own set of lessons, and the students enjoyed learning them.
The trailer is a 5' x 8' utility trailer with a 3500 lb rated axle. It is estimated to weigh about 700 lbs empty and have an estimated tongue weight of 85 lbs, although neither of those figures have been verified. The ramp is able to be removed and have boards slid into grooves in the back if a simple box trailer is desired. We would like to sell it to recoup the materials costs that went into building it. Those costs are approximately $1750. Jared Ronningen |
