Director of Human Resources Keith Gray will present the considerations for the administration of the new state Paid Family and Medical Leave Program for the Board’s review and potential approval.
The State of Minnesota has enacted a new Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) program to take effect January 1, 2026. It provides up to 12 weeks of paid medical leave and 12 weeks of paid family leave (20 weeks total) to eligible employees. The 2026 premium rate for the state PFML program is set at 0.88% of employee wages, with employers and employees sharing the cost equally (each paying 0.44%). The statute allows increases in future years up to 1.1%. Recommended Action: The Shakopee Public Schools Insurance Committee has reviewed both the state PFML plan and private equivalent plan options approved by the state, focusing on cost projections, rate stability, administrative efficiency, and alignment with existing benefits programs. The Insurance Committee recommends MetLife as the District’s plan, due to a proposal offering 0.88% in the first year and a guaranteed rate of 0.88% in the second year while providing budget certainty, administrative efficiency, and a more predictable customer service experience. |
