Please remember, public comments can only be made about items on the current meetings agenda.Good evening, Board members and Superintendent Brown. My name is Nicholas Collins. I have two students in the district; a sophomore entering her junior year at Klamath Union, and a daughter entering 6th grade at Ponderosa Middle School. I'm also a district staff member and a proud graduate of Klamath Falls City Schools. I want to speak tonight about the elimination of the College and Career Readiness program at Klamath Union. Oregon's Measure 98 High School Success fund provides our district with dedicated funding specifically for college and career readiness. This spring, the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission sent the district a letter commending this program by name. They noted that Oregon's statewide FAFSA and ORSAA completion rate is 45.3%. Klamath Union's is nearly 85% almost double the state average. That is not a program that should be eliminated. That is a program that should be a model. This past weekend I spoke with my daughter and several of her classmates. These rising juniors and seniors were upset not just because the program is going away, but because no one has told them what is replacing it or how this change will benefit them. My daughter enters her junior year next fall. As a senior she will be submitting college applications and scholarship materials. Eliminating this support the year before she needs it most leaves her and her classmates without guidance at exactly the wrong time. I am asking the board to provide families and students with clear written communication explaining what is replacing this program, why this decision was made, and how college and career readiness support will be maintained for our students going forward. Thank you. Please select one that most describes your affiliation with the district.Parent of a KFCS studentHow will you be attending the board meeting?In-personBy my initials below I acknowledge that I have read and understood the above policies and procedures in its entirety and agree to abide by them.
