Please remember, public comments can only be made about items on the current meetings agenda. In April, Governor Kotek’s Executive Order No. 26-06 directed Oregon school districts to commit to not reducing student instructional time below the levels that existed when she signed the order. KFCS seems to be moving toward eliminating early-release Wednesdays in response to the Governor’s directive in an effort to add instructional time to our year. However, KFEA would like to keep early-release professional development (PD) time for the following reasons: 1) With the KFCNES model being implemented in KFCS, these teachers will need this dedicated time to plan and build lessons that match its requirements throughout the year. 2) The elementary early-release schedule was already planned to support teachers’ professional development in Bookworms ELA, which is the critical writing component of the adoption. 3) Relying on contract language for “call-back times” interferes with the work/life balance that is critical to preventing burnout. While contractually acceptable, this approach fails to acknowledge the extensive effort our teachers are putting into increasing rigor at all levels, especially for our young families who are still learning to navigate this balance. 4) During our KFCNES Workshop on April 27, I asked the Board to please give grace to our teachers and understand the incredible workplace shift many of our employees will be experiencing.  Entirely removing professional development time will create an additional burden. 5) Lastly, the Executive order does not require we remove all of our PD. For all of these reasons, I ask the Board to work with KFEA, school staff, and our administrators to maintain professional development time during an early-release model. Please select one that most describes your affiliation with the district.KFCS EmployeeHow will you be attending the board meeting?In-personBy my initials below I acknowledge that I have read and understood the above policies and procedures in its entirety and agree to abide by them.
